Winner of the ARD International Music Competition 2024, Leonid Surkov is a young Russian Oboist living in Switzerland.

Born in 2000, he started his musical education at the Gnessin School of Music in Moscow with Denis Osver and later moved to Berlin to continue his studies with Prof. Washington Barella at the University of the Arts Berlin.

During his studies Leonid became a prizewinner of different international competitions, such as ARD International Music Competition, The Muri Competition and 13th International Oboe Competition of Japan in Tokyo. He also received the Bruno-Frey-Preis of the Landesmusikakademie Baden-Württemberg and, as a member of the JuVentus wind quintet, was a scholarship holder of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Berlin association.

Latest appearances as a soloist include concerts with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rindfunks, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Wiener Kammerorchester, Academic State Symphony Orchestra of the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Collegium Musicum Basel. Chamber music invitations led Leonid to Davos Festival, Neuschwanstein Festival, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Ticino Musica Festival. Among his chamber music partners were Dmitry Smirnov, Kimiko Imani, François Benda, Denis Linnik and Matthias Buchholz.

Leonid is a principal oboist at the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Switzerland. As of September 2026 he is also taking over the oboe class at Musik-Akademie Basel.
